The idea for the Neighbourhood Youth Music Showcase began with my son Louis. Although he has significant hearing loss in one ear, he has shown remarkable determination in learning the violin and has developed a deep love for music. Through music lessons and performances, he built friendships with other young musicians, and I often saw how much joy and confidence they gained when they had opportunities to perform together. I wanted to create more opportunities for youth to share their talents with the community, which inspired me to apply for a Neighbourhood Small Grant.
After receiving the grant, our family worked together to bring the project to life. Louis helped reach out to performers and encourage participation, while we carefully planned how to use the budget in the most effective way. We looked for ways to create a memorable experience while keeping costs low. One idea we especially loved was giving each performer a rose as a small token of appreciation for sharing their music with the community.
To promote the event, we used social media platforms including Instagram and Xiaohongshu, and posted printed flyers on community bulletin boards throughout Richmond. Along the way, our story attracted the attention of Richmond News, which interviewed Louis and later published an article highlighting youth participation and leadership in the project.
On the day of the showcase, the weather was beautiful, and many community members stopped to listen to the performances. Families gathered together, neighbours stayed to enjoy the music, and young performers encouraged one another throughout the event. One performer, Angelina Rayak, and her family even travelled from Surrey to participate. We also shared packaged snacks and bottled drinks with audience members and children who stopped by, helping create a welcoming and festive atmosphere.
This project showed us how a small community grant can have a meaningful impact. We learned that young people are eager to contribute when given the opportunity, and that music is a powerful way to bring people together. Most importantly, we saw new connections being formed through a shared appreciation of youth talent, creativity, and community spirit.
