My project was the recording of a 30 minute live musical show with my indie-folk duo Rumour Mill at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson, BC. The intention of the video is to send it to Kootenay Retirement Homes to provide entertainment for the residents. We played a mixture of original songs and covers (such as Ray Charles and Tom Waits). Our instrumentation is vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar, keyboard and violin. The project came together flawlessly. With support from Olivia and Terry at the Capitol Theatre we filmed using two video cameras and a simple audio set-up (2 vocal mics, and DIs for our instruments). I edited the video and Aline (my bandmate) mixed the audio. We are currently in the process of co-ordinating the online viewing with the retirement homes. As Covid restrictions have begun to lift, we look forward to playing at the homes in person, but are thankful to The Osprey Foundation for supporting this project to help us provide entertainment while there are still restrictions in place! If anyone has contacts for homes outside the Kootenays, please let us know – we are happy to share our music with them!
We look forward to doing this sort of project again, with new music and even better editing skills! In the future, I would set up one more room mic for a bit more live sound.
