We were delighted to be able to hold a hybrid creative writing workshop at the Whistler Public Library on September 13th, 2021 from 7 – 8 p.m. Local author Katherine Fawcett taught the creative workshop “A Crash Course in Empathy.” Fortunately, we were able to accommodate in-person attendees as the PHO had relaxed health orders.
We had 14 people sign-up for the in-person workshop, and 28 people signed up for the virtual workshop, which we livestreamed through Zoom. To reach as many locals as possible, we partnered with The Whistler Public Library, and The Whistler Writing Society, and they sent announcements out through their newsletters and social media.
An ad was also placed on Facebook to target regional participants. The video production and Zoom livestream was a technical challenge but we pulled it off and this was a great test-pilot for similar events for the future, and knowing that we have local technical teams that can accomplish the production. The Whistler Writing Society covered the costs of the video and sound portion of the event. The event was very successful, and proved that livestreaming events makes attendance very accessible to those who may not be able to participate in person, for various reasons, whether pandemic-related, or they have travel or accessibility barriers.
