We invited newcomers to our community to join us to walk, practice English, visit local trails, make friends and hear some First Nations stories. We did four walks. We had a challenge as there was a bus strike and many of our target population lack transportation. We also had a heat wave. We modified our plans to accommodate these challenges by selecting an easy meeting location and choosing a forested walk during the hottest times. We offered snacks and beverages to participants.
We were fortunate to have local First Nations stories on ‘How the Coho Got His Hooked Nose’ and the story of Mount Cheam. We gave participants a copy of the local brochure listing parks and trails in our community.
Over the four walks participation varied from 4-14 people at each walk.
This project was well received by participants. We would be happy to do this again, or on an ongoing basis.
