On September 5th, 2025, I had the privilege of organizing and hosting the Acrylic Fluid Art workshop at South Vancouver Neighbourhood House. My vision was to build a hands-on experience where community members of all ages and backgrounds could unleash their creativity in a welcoming environment, regardless of prior painting experience. As the clock hit 5 PM, participants began arriving—families with children, local seniors, teenagers, and newcomers to Vancouver who were searching for new ways to connect. I was overwhelmed and delighted by the turnout. We surpassed our goal in both attendance and in the depth of engagement. People were not just eager to create; they were excited to share stories and learn from one another, transforming our workshop into a true communal celebration.
The greatest surprise was the diversity of artistic approaches. Some attendees bravely experimented with mixing colors and pouring techniques, while others introduced swirling patterns and designs inspired by traditions from their own cultures. These moments of intercultural exchange enriched the workshop experience and became a spontaneous source of awe for all of us. I also learned how much courage it takes for people to try something new, especially those who admitted that this was their first time working with paint. Their smiles and growing confidence as the workshop progressed was incredibly rewarding.
Throughout the session, I gained new appreciation for the power of art to foster community spirit and connection. Questions, laughter, and creativity filled the room as brushes and colors swirled across each canvas. My most memorable moment came at the end, when every participant held up their finished artwork and we captured a group photo—each canvas reflecting a unique journey and story.
I’d like to acknowledge the support of Prabhi and Cherry and other supporters, including Neighbourhood Small Grants, for helping provide materials and outreach. The workshop wouldn’t have been possible without their help or the venue offered by South Vancouver Neighbourhood House. I am proud of what we accomplished and grateful for everyone’s participation. For community members considering events like this, my advice is to remain open to surprises, trust in your team and participants, and let creativity flow.
Attached is our event poster, which can be shared on social media to spread the magic of that day. To relive those wonderful moments, or for any inquiries, please contact me at spathipa216@gmail.com.
