I was originally interested in growing plants for the neighbourhood but since the funding came in later than I had expected, I pivoted to providing native plants for the neighbourhood. Native plants are key for our local ecosystems and will support and attract biodiversity. As native bees and butterflies are in decline, providing them with suitable native habitat is particularly important. I was in contact with the coordinator at the Butterflyway Project who pointed me towards the Coast Salish Plant Nursery where I was able to source Douglas Aster, Coastal Strawberries and Nodding Onion. I decided I would make the plants available during Pollinator Week from a table in front of my house since I see a lot of people walk past. I made some informational signs about how to plant and care for the plants, but also about native plants and native butterflies and bees as well.
