In our housing complex, strong relationships exist among neighbours as most residents are well-acquainted. Neighbours frequently greet each other, children often play together, and an online group chat is used to share resources, information, and community concerns.
The annual Block Watch Party is a significant community event typically held during the summer months. The event is organized and hosted by Block Watch program volunteers, including me. Preparation begins with submitting a grant application. Once funding is approved, we notify residents and gather their input on potential activities. The event is scheduled for the same time each year to accommodate summer plans and ensure consistent participation.
With over ten years of experience organizing celebrations in my home country, I actively contribute ideas for event themes and planning. This year, I developed the event plan with the proposal and shared it with my co-organizer for review. Upon approval, we promoted the event through door-to-door outreach and online communication. We also conducted two planning meetings prior to the event to ensure that all arrangements were in place.
On the day of the event, preparations began two hours ahead, including setting up tents, chairs, decorations and food stations to welcome attendees. A few visitors stopped in as they were passing by because they were curious about our event.
While the event was a success, we faced some challenges. Not all residents were able to attend due to family commitments, and despite our efforts to accommodate everyone’s schedules, it was not possible to achieve full participation. Nevertheless, those who attended had a wonderful time.
Following the event, we received numerous positive messages in the group chat. Residents expressed appreciation for the crafts and games provided and shared how much they enjoyed the day. Many are already looking forward to participating again next year, highlighting the ongoing value of the Block Watch Party in strengthening community connections.
Throughout this experience, I am proud of my passion for bringing people together as a family. I truly enjoy seeing happy faces, neighbours helping one another, and the sense of connection we build. At that moment, I suddenly understood the deeper meaning of this project. I feel grateful and fortunate that we have the opportunity and support to make events like this possible.
