Despite a week of unpredictable forecasts and flyer redesigns, the skies cleared just in time for the 3rd Annual Blundell Block Party—and what a celebration it turned out to be! From longtime neighbours to curious newcomers, the event brought together a vibrant mix of people who turned a quiet neighborhood park into a joyful hub of laughter, games, music, and food.
Some attendees discovered the party through social media, others spotted posters around the neighbourhood, and a few adventurous souls wandered in from the other side of Gilbert Street, drawn by the flyer when they cut through Garret Park enroute to Freshco a few days ago. They arrived with picnic blankets, Bocce balls, and open hearts—ready to join the fun and spark new friendships.
The younger members of our community played a big role too. Our pint-sized organizer helped run the game stations with impressive enthusiasm. Participating kids proudly collected RCMP and Block Watch stickers and reflectors, a thoughtful touch to help them kick off the school year safely and confidently.
No block party is complete without food, and this one delivered in delicious abundance. Hot dogs and prawns sizzled on the grill, homemade lemonade flowed freely, and tables overflowed with a variety of mouthwatering dishes and desserts. Some neighbours brought homegrown organic pears and juicy grapes to share, that added a wholesome touch to the feast.
This year, the games lit up the evening. Bocce balls rolled across the grass, pickleball and badminton matches sparked friendly competition, and a few kids zipped by on scooters. A cozy card game rounded out the night, proving that connection doesn’t need a scoreboard.
Planning the party wasn’t without its challenges. With Richmond’s summer unusually dry but the long weekend forecast shifting daily, I prepared three versions of the flyer to hedge against rain. In the end, luck was on our side—the drizzle stopped just in time, and the weather held steady throughout the party.
