Canning and pickling are easy, but the process requires lots of space and a little patience. So join us — Lisa and Chloë — at a big commercial kitchen in Kitsilano to pickle some vegetables and can fresh fruit on Saturday September 13, 2014 from noon-8pm.
Want to attend? Let us know here. Kitchen space is limited!
The idea is to get together, preserve fruits and vegetables, and share in the experience (and clean up). We’ll have all the equipment plus supplies for pickle brine and fruit syrup to share, so all you need to bring are jars and the produce you plan to preserve. We promise it will be fun, easy, and delicious. Kids are welcome!

Date: Sat Sept 13, 2014
Time: noon-8pm
Where: St. Mark’s, 1805 Larch Street (Kitsilano), Vancouver
Cost: Free – thanks to a Neighbourhood Small Grant!

Plan for the day:

Potluck lunch – noon
Quick rules of canning and pickling, plus a demo – 1pm, after lunch
Pickle or can your own creations, or help a neighbor – about 2pm onwards

What you need:

Fresh vegetables for pickling: one or any of cucumers, zucchini, carrots, garlic, beans, beets, cabbage, asparagus, ginger, onions, cauliflower, peppers (hot or not)
Fresh or frozen fruit for canning: ripe peaches, apricots, plums, nectarines, pears, apples, berries, cherries (note: ripe fruit is much tastier than unripe produce!)

Sandwiches will be provided, but feel free to bring a dish or treat to share

What we’ll have:

Sandwiches for lunch
Extra jars and lids
Supplies, vinegar, and herbs for pickling brine
Sugar and citric acid for canning fruits
Pots, jar lifters, canning funnels, and some other nifty equipment that makes the process easier
Large room for children’s activities; please bring a second person and games to share if bringing your children

Feel also free to invite a friend – just let us know so we can track numbers. The more the merrier!
