Last year, I received an NSG grant to do an in-depth 2-session pottery workshop with the older class (4-6) at the Galiano School. It was well received and the feedback was that they wanted more and also for the younger kids. This NSG grant has helped make that possible by covering the costs of materials and supplies.
I said “choose your own adventure “ and they did. They loved having a wide open space for making anything they’d like. The younger class was actually more confident and immediately immersed themselves in their projects.
I’ve heard since that they want way more pottery time and had a blast. Well, I guess that’s good feedback and I’ll need to find the time to make it happen! I’ve worked out a smoother process this year that is less onerous for me and engages more students. It was about 4 hrs in the classroom and 8-10 hr in the background prepping, firing, delivering, etc.
My highlights were definitely seeing some of the really creative pieces made. One girl made a gravestone and a hand reaching out of the ground. They’re really into Wednesday Adams. Others made an octopus, a cupcake, and an owl. One boy who was honestly quite violent with the clay last year calmly made some slab cylinder vases this year – what a change in energy. Thank you again for the grant.
