The beaver creek community hall, a local not-for-profit, was very happy to hear we were awarded this Neighbourhood Small Grant. Our club is in Port Alberni in the ACRD’s Beaufort Region. When we started to plan for this Christmas tree light up event in September, we wanted to put on a fun welcoming event that we can continue to run annually.
When I think about the neighbourhood I grew up in, I fondly remember many events at the beaver creek community hall, holiday gatherings, and whole-neighborhood games of hide and seek, sock hops, and Halloween events. It was a place where everyone knew each other’s families and looked out for one another—neighbours helping neighbours.
There was a shared wish for a gathering where we could all come together around Christmas time and start an annual event that can continue for years to come.
The Christmas tree light up event was a wonderful opportunity to meet many neighbours as we had approximately 100 people come out to the event with special guests (Santa and the grinch). During the event, I saw people exchanging business cards, sharing phone numbers, and even arranging playdates.
I believe this event was just the beginning of many more gatherings and connections to come.
