Our project to provide amendments for our 50 community garden members could not have been timed better to have the greatest impact! Due to the craziness around covid, we could not plan our usual group purchase of a truckload of compost or manure, which normally gives our plots the soil nutrition needed to grow lots of healthy veggies and fruits. The truck load of compost requires a large work party to shovel it out and distribute it to all the plots, something we were not able to do this year, due to the covid risk. So we applied for our NSG grant to buy amendments to will help fill the gap left by the missing manure. When we applied, we imagined that our garden elders (just experienced gardeners) could lead small groups to show us how to use the amendments. But the third wave of covid put an end to that! In the end, we organized a Zoom workshop to provide the information, then members came in small numbers to safely distance and portion out their share of the amendments. Now the fertilizer and soil builders are helping our kale and lettuce grow! Thank you Vancouver Foundation and Kits House for providing us with grant money, so our garden could purchase amendments for the soil in our vegetable plots!
