Festival of Lights – Project Story
The Festival of Lights was envisioned as a meaningful community gathering to celebrate culture, connection, and inclusion. Our goal was to bring together seniors and community members in a warm and welcoming environment where they could celebrate traditions while strengthening social bonds. From the beginning, we wanted the event to feel vibrant, organized, and accessible to everyone.
We formed a small planning team that included staff members and dedicated volunteers. Responsibilities were divided clearly. Some focused on booking the venue and coordinating decorations, while others managed food arrangements and cultural performances. Promotion was shared through social media, community networks, and word of mouth to ensure broad participation. We were also mindful of creating a safe and inclusive environment, particularly for seniors and vulnerable adults.
As part of the celebration, battery-operated candles were distributed to participants. This allowed everyone, including seniors, to safely take part in the symbolic lighting tradition. Seniors enjoyed cultural activities, festive food, music, and meaningful conversations that strengthened community connections. Volunteers played a key role in assisting seniors and ensuring smooth transitions between activities.
Through this project, we learned the importance of early planning, delegation, and consistent communication. We also witnessed how cultural celebrations can reduce isolation and foster a strong sense of belonging. The Festival of Lights was not only a celebration but a powerful reminder of how community collaboration can create safe, inclusive, and joyful experiences for all.
