Noticing the abundance of basketball and badminton opportunities in Richmond, I began to wonder how volleyball seemed to be neglected. Taking this passion of mine, I decided to reach out to NSG for help.
The initial challenges we came across was the outrageous cost of gymnasium rentals which wouldn’t be the best way to utilize the funding, so we booked a court space in a peers apartment and we were able to use that space completely for free. The coaching was also done by me voluntarily as I had previously coached for the junior boys team in RHS. We had an abundance of participants, and the small gym simply wouldn’t be enough to host the practices and drills. So as the weather got nicer we went out to the olympic oval beach courts and outdoor grass areas where we used the funding to buy an outdoor net. This exposed our participants to the various kinds of volleyball and perks of each kind.
At the end of the program, the participants all gave very positive feedback saying how well the coaching was done and if in the future this program happens again they’d like to join. I hope that through my program more people can participate and enjoy the sport of volleyball and to create more opportunities for us to create a closer community in Richmond.
