The theme of this grant was “know your neighbors and connect”.
Food, sports and appreciation of nature was something that would easily connect us with each other. This grant was to utilize those traits to bring the community members together and celebrate diversity. We divided it into two components.
A. Walk the walk: Summer was a great time to explore the neighborhood. We used this opportunity to “know the neighbors” and explored different neighborhoods by walking. We explored Bear Creek Park, gardens and playgrounds . We incorporated snacks and drinks breaks in order to create an environment that fosters conversations, collaborations and cooperation among the participants. Photography on the way added more fun to the participants by creating great memory of the event.
B. Later in the evening ,we organized a picnic where neighbors and families were gathered and prepared food together. During the picnic, everyone was encouraged to share some talent or skill they possessed like singing, dancing, reciting poems, telling stories and sharing their happiest and sad moment of life. The interactions among participant was one of the highlight of the event.
Share residents’ skills and knowledge: This goal was met when community members share their stories/experiences and open up door for future collaborations .
Respect and celebrate diversity: Neighbors of all ages, sex and races participated in the activity to respect and celebrate diversity.
