A Halloween to Remember at Our Urban Village
This Halloween, Our Urban Village decided to do something special: host a party to bring the neighbourhood together. We wanted to share the community spirit that defines our co-housing project, so we spread the word by delivering 200 flyers to nearby homes and putting up posters on our building’s facade.
On the evening of the party, our common house was decked out in Halloween decor. Pumpkins, ghosts, and cobwebs set the mood, and many of us got into character with costumes. Guests trickled in, many with kids dressed as witches, superheroes, and other spooky creatures, while some adults arrived in costumes of their own.
The games were a big hit. Kids raced plastic spiders across tables, wrapped each other in toilet paper to create mummies, and swung enthusiastically at piñatas. The guessing game—how many googly “eyes” were in a jar—sparked a bit of competition, and the chalk art station gave kids a chance to decorate our corridors with Halloween drawings. Marshmallow-pong proved popular with everyone, and we handed out about a dozen prizes to game winners throughout the night.
The food spread was simple but satisfying: chicken wings, corn, mashed potatoes, veggie platters, and plenty of desserts. Guests mingled over finger foods, sharing stories and getting to know one another.
The night wasn’t just about games and treats—it was about connection. Neighbours who had never spoken before found themselves laughing over a shared moment, while kids darted around, making new friends. The mix of costumes, decorations, and the relaxed atmosphere made the space feel alive and welcoming.
By the time the evening wound down, it was clear the event had been a success. We met new faces, reconnected with familiar ones, and shared a fun night together. Hosting the Halloween party reminded us of the importance of reaching out and opening our doors. Sometimes, all it takes is a little effort—and maybe a piñata full of candy—to build community.
