On Sunday, July 21, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm, we held a community party at our Clubhouse for the owners/residents of our 26 Unit townhouse complex in Fleetwood, Surrey. It was very well attended; people from 22 Units joined in the fun (approx. 42 adults and 10 kids).
Some people shared their favourite cultural dishes (Chinese, Filipino, Danish, etc.) and we also ordered from local ethnic restaurants and grocery stores for the balance of the food. So our local retail community benefited as well!
It was a great opportunity to socialize with our neighbours, get to know each other a bit better and strengthen our multicultural community. The kids played at the activity table that was set up and everyone enjoyed the variety of foods and conversation.
Our Strata Council President created a Recycle Quiz, complete with prizes, to further educate everyone about ‘what goes where’ and we all learned a lot! She followed up with an email to everyone that included recycling information links that were very helpful.
It took a few weeks of planning and careful budgeting and, judging from the feedback of those who attended, it was a wonderful success! In fact, even before we wrapped up the evening, people were talking about making this an annual event.
This event definitely brought us all closer together and has had a lingering ‘feel-good vibe’ among our neighbours.
We are very grateful to Oak Avenue Neighbourhood Hub Society and the Vancouver Foundation for providing us with the funding to hold this community event. In strengthening our communities one-by-one, the lower mainland will become a friendlier, safer place to live and that’s a ‘win-win’ for everyone.
