The little library at the top of Lone Cone Road in Tofino took a little longer to create, but it was worth the wait! It is now open and getting well used. Local builders were hired to build and install the library. The library was named Načiks Little Library to acknowledge that the neighbourhood rests on traditional Tla-o-qui-aht territory. I created the sign, sealed it so it would be weatherproof, and lit it up inside with solar lights, allowing people to access books even in the winter months when it’s dark by 5 pm.

There was an opening day celebration, and many neighbours came to trade books and eat cookies. The eldest and the youngest neighbours did the official ribbon-cutting. One neighbour brought his guitar and played music, and another read books to the children.

With the help of some children, I’ve started planting flowers around the library, and a neighbour donated a rose bush. There’s also been talk about applying for another grant to build a bench, so there’s a spot for people to rest and read.

The library is a lovely addition to the neighbourhood. Everyone comments on how busy it is, and it’s wonderful to see people walking up the hill with books under their arms. We’ve also seen artwork, business cards, and seedlings show up at the library. I look forward to seeing the library and garden space evolve as a connection point for community, ideas, art, and stories.
