I taught online Mexican cooking classes from July 2021 to September 2021. I taught 5 online classes via Zoom every other week.
It was a very gratifying experience for the students and for myself. Some of the attendees were cooking at the time of the class and others decided to do it at a later date. The fact that the classes were online made it easy and safe for the students to attend.
One of the challenges I faced was that I needed to make sure that people had a clear view of my stove so they could see the different steps of the preparation of whatever I was cooking. The way I solved it was by placing a little camera above my stove and prior to the start of the class, I would make sure that the camera was placed in the correct position.
The students were a mix of people who had very minimal to some cooking knowledge. Even the students with very minimal cooking skills were able to follow the instructions and created great Mexican dishes for them and for their friends and family members.
One student who said she had never cooked made chicken tinga and sent me a picture of her creation (attached) and it was great!
I am so pleased with this experience because I was able to teach people another skill that contributes positively to their lives in a fun, relaxed environment.
At the end of each class, we would also comment about Mexican food, its origins, where could they buy the ingredients in Vancouver all while having fun, getting to know each other, and building community.
Most of the students said they would be interested in attending more online Mexican cooking classes in case they were offered in the future.
