Riley Park Community Garden
Garden Fantasies
The New Kind of Community Garden opening in Riley Park in November, 2016.
We held three community outreach events with the support of the Neighbourhood Small Grant (NSG) and in collaboration with other NSG recipients as we discovered our points of intersection.
Funds received: $325
Activities:
June 4, 10 am – 2 pm, Shredding Day at the Nat Bailey Parking Lot. This was an opportunity for residents to securely shred their personal documents while raising awareness and funds for the Garden. Vancity secured the Urban Impact shredding truck; David’s Tea served iced tea; snacks were provided by Ben; the Little Mountain Community Fund and the Main Art Drift Society contributed to the garden fundraising; and the event was in partnership with the Vancouver Parks Board.
June 18, 12 -7 pm, Car Free Day on Main Street. We had an information table and speakers corner to raise awareness about the garden. Seed packages were given out during the event.
November 5, 10 am – 2 pm, Fall Riley Park Community Garden Celebration and opening day of our partner the Vancouver Farmers Winter Market at Nat Bailey Stadium.
We had two locations with activities: at the Farmers Market and at our Garden Corner (30th/ Ontario). We offered tea from Sonnentor and David’s Tea, cookies from Lemonade Gluten Free Bakery, apples from August Market on Main.
Our activities included: Discover Riley Park, a place-based nature exploration for kids; The Time Machine connecting us to 50,000 years of natural history of the park; the Big Draw what we imagine what we want to see in the garden and the place; Yoga and Fruitluck; planting garlic in “Ed’s Garden”.
