As avid hikers, we are always eager to encourage others to get outside and share in the natural beauty of the Grand Forks area, as well as the social aspects. Trekking poles offer added stability, reduce strain on joints, and give walkers a fuller workout. We partnered with our local Seniors Centre to reach our target audience, and promoted with posters and on facebook. The grant allowed us to buy five pairs of high quality poles from our local shop. We held two workshops, with about 8 or 9 attending each clinic, and introduced people to different pole styles, walking patterns, and how to handle hills and stairs. We then walked with the poles, addressing difficulties or challenges. The grant included some money for refreshments which allowed us to discuss the importance of healthy snacks and hydration. Both were a huge success – several people borrowed poles for a month, some bought poles as a result of the clinics, and others began using the ones they’d had for years. We will continue to introduce poles at the start of easy city walks. Thank you to the Phoenix Foundation for offering this community-building opportunity!
