I was really excited to receive this opportunity from the Y-SNG and use it for my community initiative. Through the grant, I was able to gain better materials for my project and become more prepared for my upcoming event. During my time collaborating with the Y-SNG, I was able to work on Project Bloom. Project Bloom is my community project where I strive to share joy and encouragement. Through my work, I make origami creations with encouraging messages attached, and origami craft kits. In the craft kits, I pack them with paper, origami instructions, and links to tutorial videos.
In order to plan the event for my project, the first thing I did was contact the coordinator of the Thompson Community Centre. Through working with her, we decided to run an event for Family Day. In order to create a fun event for passing by parents and children, I had originally set out to host an open craft workshop that would catch the attention of individuals, and allow me to teach and interact with them. However, due to Covid-19, this plan was altered, and instead of being able to hold an in-person session or event, I changed to making origami heart kits for Pink Shirt Day, as well as a heart display.
Throughout the planning and execution of my project, many issues occurred. The major one in my case, being Covid-19. Although I mentioned before that I had altered my event, I really was a bit disappointed by the change. As this would have been the first chance I would have had to run an in-person workshop. Also, I faced an issue with time management and was a bit behind on my project, leading to a huge rush at the end. From my experience, I learned that unexpected alterations are okay, and it’s best to ask for help when you notice that you may need it. Overall I am grateful for the grant as it allowed me to expand my project, and to become closer to my community of Richmond.
