The Share Your Story- Multicultural Cookoff event was held with the goal of allowing people of different ethnicities to gather and share their culture in a friendly and safe space. The event went really well with 12 teams (approx 30 participants) each cooking a cultural delicacy, whilst 20 other participants came to “taste test” and voted for the best booth based on their presentation, taste and cultural sharing. The atmosphere was lively, and there were lots of curious faces and smiles across the room.
Some challenges that I faced were the increased number of participants than anticipated. The event was planned to have 20-30 people, however it ended up exceeding over 45 people. Therefore, we had to do some readjustments with spacing and formed an orderly line outside of the room. Funds were also reallocated to accommodate the increased number of participating teams. What I have learnt from this process is that it is best to allow enough time prior to the actual event to prepare the participants, setting out a clear timeline would have been helpful.
My most memorable moment was going to all the booths to try different foods, hearing the cultural stories/experiences of others and seeing their enthusiasm to embrace and share their culture! One team even dressed up in cultural clothing and made large flags to decorate their booth. Others made PowerPoint slides, and advertised enthusiastically!
