Our community is a 118 unit townhouse complex in the heart of Whalley. We are multi-cultural, multi-generational and have residents of different socioeconomic backgrounds. We have had quite a turnover of residents in the last few years.
We held an afternoon barbecue to encourage residents to get to know one another and promote community harmony in an informal environment. The barbecue was held on our property and staffed by volunteers. We served hamburgers, hot dogs, a variety of salads, non-alcoholic drinks, cookies and cupcakes. In our flyer, we encouraged residents to bring their own chairs and stay for a while to interact with their neighbours. We had a great turn out, especially among newcomers to our community, and achieved our goal of getting residents to interact with each other.
We sought donations from local businesses and were successful in negotiating a gift card and a discount for food from a local grocery store. We kept costs down by using residents’ equipment such as barbecues, tables, tarps, etc.
Unfortunately, the weather that day prevented us from having activities or games for the children.
