This past August, my friends and I were able to host a Know Your Rights in the Workplace workshop (“We Take Care of Us”) in a local church to help keep workers updated on knowing their rights and how to protect themselves and others from being exploited in the workplace. If even one worker was helped with this workshop, I already considered that a success, so I’m glad more than 20 people were in attendance. My friends and I had put up some posters to advertise the event which I think went quite well — one particular worker who attended the workshop said he saw the poster and was excited to learn more, stating he was happy to know this workshop was available because it’s important to stay informed. A point of improvement is that I believe we would have received more attendees if we had more conversations while flyering instead of mainly focusing on putting up posters around the neighbourhood. Another point of improvement would be to choose a more appropriate venue if I were to host another similar event. The venue we chose was a local church which had their downstairs rented out for another congregation’s afternoon service downstairs, so the whole venue was periodically loud with music and singing. Thankfully, we came prepared with a microphone and speaker! Overall, I’m grateful to everyone who contributed to this successful event – from NSG for the grant, to my friends who helped make the poster, helped flyer, and helped buy and prepare refreshments, to the knowledgeable BCGEU worker who led the Know Your Rights workshop, and to the venue for having a nice and clean space to host this event.
