Yoga in the Park — Project Report
In July, I organized Yoga in the Park, a series of four community yoga sessions held every Thursday evening from 6 to 7 pm at Memorial South Park. The project was designed to offer “Slow Yoga for Community Care” as a way to support and connect with my local community, especially in light of the recent Lapu Lapu tragedy. My goal was to create a welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities to come together, relax, and nurture their well-being.
The sessions attracted a steady group of participants, with attendance ranging from about 4 to 12 people each week. While attendance naturally tapered off towards the end of the month, this was expected for this type of outdoor event. Weather was mostly cooperative except for one cancellation due to rain. The park’s beautiful setting under the trees created a peaceful atmosphere that participants appreciated.
As the sole organizer, I managed all aspects of the project myself, including promotion, setup, and purchasing refreshments. The grant funding allowed me to provide fresh fruit, juice, and snacks for the attendees each week. I also used the grant to buy compostable disposable cups and plates, a tea carafe, a juice carafe, and to cover printing costs for promotional posters. Although some posters were removed from poles, making Facebook groups a more effective advertising method, this was a valuable learning experience about local outreach challenges.
The project reinforced the incredible power of community connection. I was touched by how quickly strong bonds formed among attendees, and I even received a gift on the final day as a sign of gratitude. It was a meaningful reminder of how kindness and appreciation flow naturally when people come together with shared intention.
While I do not plan to continue Yoga in the Park this summer, I am actively seeking an affordable or donated indoor space where I can offer weekly yoga classes with an accessible sliding scale fee. This project has inspired me to continue fostering community wellness through yoga in a sustainable way.
Overall, Yoga in the Park was a rewarding experience that brought calm, connection, and care to my neighbourhood, and I’m grateful for the opportunity the small grant provided to make it happen.
