Gossip Island Fishing Derby – A 56-Year Tradition of Community Connection
Now in its 56th year, the Gossip Island Fishing Derby continues to be a cherished community tradition—one that brings generations together in a celebration of simple joy, connection, and island life.
Planning for this year’s derby began months in advance. My sister and I organized the event, pulling in volunteers – many of whom have participated in the derby for decades. Our goal was to honour the event’s long-standing traditions while making sure it remained welcoming and accessible for everyone in the community. With limited infrastructure and no formal facilities on the island, every detail—meals, games, signage, safety, and prizes—had to be thoughtfully planned and brought over well in advance.
The derby is rooted in simplicity and spirit. It began, as always, with early-morning fishers heading to the water, lines cast with hope and excitement. By afternoon, the community was gathered on the grassy field, where the festivities really took hold. Children raced in old-fashioned games—potato sack, wheelbarrow, and three-legged races—while adults looked on, many recalling their own childhood turns in the same races decades ago.
A basic but satisfying meal was served up thanks to volunteers. It was important that the event remained accessible to all, and this grant helped us do that. Souvenir ribbons were handed out to everyone, a small but meaningful token that has long been part of the derby’s charm. For the fishers, catch prizes were awarded to those who brought in the biggest or most impressive fish—a moment that always draws a crowd and applause.
What truly set the day apart, though, was the atmosphere. The sun lit up the open field as neighbours met, stories were exchanged, and friendships were formed or rekindled. Whether it was someone’s first derby or their fiftieth, everyone had a place.
At its heart, the derby is a grassroots event, kept alive by the passion of volunteers and the spirit of the islanders. In a world that moves quickly, the derby offers something rare: a chance to slow down, be present, and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
