Since its opening, Pompom Free Little Art Gallery has blossomed into a vibrant corner of creativity where anyone can share or discover small works of art. Thanks to the financial contribution from Neighbourhood Small Grant and the Campbell River Community Foundation, what began as a simple wooden box on the side of Birch Street has become a joyful point of exchange, drawing in curious passersby, dedicated artists, and first-time creators alike. Visitors stop not only to admire the ever-changing displays but also to contribute their own unique pieces, ensuring that the gallery is always fresh, surprising, and full of life.
Beyond the steady flow of artworks, Pompom has sparked meaningful connections between neighbors. Conversations spring up spontaneously, people ask questions, and contributors of the Campbell River Community Facebook page were unanimous in their delight with the idea! Here’s a sample:
I SO INCREDIBLY love this !!!

What a wonderful idea! Wish I lived in Campbell River. 💕
Local artists can find encouragement and visibility here, while those who never considered themselves “artists” have been inspired to try their hand at creating something to share. This mix of voices and styles reflects the diversity of the community itself, making the gallery a mirror of its surroundings.
The success of Pompom Free Little Art Gallery lies not only in the number of works exchanged but in the sense of belonging it creates. It has become more than just a place to pick up or drop off art—it is a shared project, shaped collectively by the people who care for it. Oftentimes, I notice that unknown but very capable hands have reorganized the display when it was needed, making it better than it was!
Each tiny canvas, sculpture, handmade card, or even tiny flower arrangement is a reminder that art can be accessible, spontaneous, and deeply human. In its own small way, Pompom is proof that creativity, when shared freely, can participate in strengthening the bonds that hold a community together.
