Dog Stick Libraries: Simple Joys and Shared Care
Sometimes community projects start small and grow in ways you do not expect. I had planned to build a few dog stick libraries this fall, but timing and weather got in the way. Instead, we went with what was readily available on Haida Gwaii and within our budgets.
We found two sturdy planters, drilled drainage holes, and filled them with toys we sourced locally – balls and “sticks”. They became simple “libraries” for dog toys and sticks, one at the Skidegate baseball diamond and one in Daajing Giids. These are popular spots where people walk their dogs while visiting the farmers’ market or walking their dogs outside of softball season. The one in Skidegate is next to the playschool where their favourite furry friend Lemon will be able to play with them and the toys supplied.
The idea is simple: borrow a toy, play, and return it. If you have extras at home, you can leave a few behind for others to use. We also kept a small stash of toys and bags on hand to replenish over the coming weeks as wear and tear is to be expected.
It has been nice to see people share photos of their dogs enjoying the toys, and a few even asked if they could donate more. What started as a quick solution became a small source of connection and joy. It reminded me that even the simplest projects can create community when people take part and care for something together.
