We chose to do a tomato plant/basil seed giveaway to promote our local farmers and teach people about companion planting. Basil plants keep pests away from other plants! And obviously when the two plants are mature, beautiful food is created. We offered recipes as well. We also had sticks and markers and stickers available to engage the kids that came by. The created plant markers to go in the pots.
We reached out to our favourite local farmer and she sold us big healthy plants at a very good price so we were able to give away about 60 plants. She also threw in some zucchini! We set up on the street outside a local bakery so there was lots of foot traffic.
We had zero issues with planning as we have a solid relationship with the farmer and the bakery we set up in front of.
What we did learn though, was that so many people just don’t realize where their food comes from. Everyone that stopped by was super excited to take home a plant and grow something they could eat.
