We hosted a 2SLGBTQIA+ hiking series within Squamish and shíshálh Nation homelands (Sunshine Coast, BC), nurturing connections with place and each other. With few regular outdoor 2SLGBTQIA+ events happening on the coast, the hikes brought people together in an accepting and low-stress space to build community, connect and share food.
The series hosted three queer community members who offered a plant/animals walk, a discussion about Indigenous and settler land relations/connecting to land in respectful ways and a forest bathing experience.
On our first hike at ?iylus (Cliff Gilker Park), we meandered through the woods crossing beautiful streams, laughter and stories filled the air as we breathed in the forest. We paused for a break, watching two Pacific Wrens zip about as rays of sun filtered through the trees.
On our second hike at Big Tree Park, our community guests helped us use all our senses to connect with the forest. Together, we felt the moss and considered our positionality. Stopping under a huge 500year old Doug Fir each person shared a story about their relationships with place. As a multi-generational group, everyone learned more ways to engage and connect through a forest bathing experience.
Many folks expressed how much they enjoyed the low stress, relaxed vibe of the group and how it helped them get outside and walk because we were together. Several folks also shared that the accessibility information supported them in joining the hikes.
One of the challenges we faced was getting people to commit to coming. There was a lot of interest, but it was hard to get people to show up. In future organizing, we realized that during the winter, it is easier to get people to attend indoor activities.
The hikes concluded with snacks and time to chat. With our hands cupped around mugs of hot chocolate and tea, folks shared what types of events they would like to see in the future. The hikes really inspired two of our attendees, and we are now working to co-organize future events! We are grateful for the Neighbourhood Small Grant program for helping us host events that build community.
