We started the morning with a community hike led by Alison and Ashley, from the Toby Creek trail up to the first viewpoint, then looping down the “Nothing Special” trail. About 25 neighbours (and a few happy dogs on leash!) joined in. Along the way, introductions turned into conversations — new homeowners met long-timers, and even the dogs seemed to form friendships. We took a group photo at the platform with the valley view — a reminder that we all share this same backyard.

Next up was the FireSmart community clean-up ?
Gloves on, rakes out — neighbours worked side by side clearing brush and debris around shared areas. Some brought wheelbarrows, others just their good humour. We had everyone helping, from carrying sticks, lending tools, and laughter echoing through the trees. It was a small but visible act of collective care — and one that left our neighbourhood looking tidier and safer. We also enjoyed a presentation by the local FireSmart representative.

By early afternoon, the BBQ was sizzling. Volunteers served up burgers, salads, and ice cream sandwiches, and everyone brought a lawn chair or a drink to share. The atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful — you could hear people introducing themselves, swapping stories, and discovering who lives just a few doors away. Then came one of the highlights of the day — our Wildlife and Bear Safety Talk with neighbour Steve Michel, who has decades of experience as a Human–Wildlife Conflict Specialist in Banff National Park. His stories, humour, and practical advice (including a live demo with inert bear spray!) had everyone laughing and learning. Those who wanted to also got to try the inert bear spray. We heard afterwards that several neighbours went out to buy bear spray the next day — a sure sign the message landed!
