From Neighbours to Builders: The Story Behind the Rotary Bike Park Plaza Grand Opening

Some of the best things in a community start simply, with a group of neighbours deciding that a patch of their town deserves a little more love.

That’s exactly how the Grand Opening Party of the Rotary Bike Park Plaza at Bayly Park began. Long before the DJ was booked, long before the hot dogs were on the grill, a small but determined group of Rotary Club of Whistler and Cheakamus neighbourhood volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work. There were early mornings spent gardening, planting tulips before the winter, pulling weeds and turning soil in the spring, coaxing the surrounding green space into something that felt cared for and welcoming. There were phones and laptops and group chats buzzing with the unglamorous but essential work of spreading the word about the party planning updates, posting to community boards, both physical and virtual, reaching out to neighbours, making sure that when the big day came, Whistler would show up.

And show up they did.

Last Sunday, approximately 350 people poured into Bayly Park for the Grand Opening of the Rotary Bike Park Plaza. Two live DJs and a bubble machine set the tone from the start, the kind of energy that makes you want to stay longer than you planned!

We served 250 hot dogs. Children wove between one another on the new bike path while parents chased them and grandparents cheered from the sidelines.

The mayor and several council members joined us, making speeches and lending the occasion a sense of civic pride that felt genuinely earned. People of every age, from infants in prams, toddlers finding their pedals to elderly residents savouring a sunny afternoon out.

The party filled the space exactly the way we had always imagined it would be filled.

This party was able to happen with generous support of the Whistler Community Foundation, whose Small Neighbourhood Grant helped make this vision a reality. Their belief in grassroots, community-led projects, and their willingness to back a group of neighbours with a vision anda plan,  meant the world to us. The Foundation understands something that was on full display last Sunday: that when you invest in a neighbourhood gathering place, you are investing in the social fabric of an entire community. We are deeply, sincerely grateful.

But the truest thanks belong to the volunteers. The ones who showed up in the dark cold winter months, manifesting a sunny day with flowers in bloom and freshly constructed dirt jumps… Those of us who gardened and painted, stapled flyers and sent emails, and then showed up again on the day itself to make sure every last detail was right.

The Rotary Bike Park Plaza is now open, and it belongs to the people of Whistler; the kid learning to ride without training wheels for the first time, the family looking for somewhere to spend a Sunday afternoon together, the neighbours who built it and will continue to tend to the flowers, and to all the neighbours yet to discover it.
