The community dumpling-making workshop was a great success, bringing together more than 50 people to share food, culture, and meaningful connections. The goal of this project was to create a welcoming space where Chinese community members in Mission could meet, build friendships, and strengthen their sense of belonging.

Organizing this event required careful planning. One of the main challenges was finding a suitable venue with a kitchen where participants could prepare ingredients and cook together. Purchasing fresh ingredients for a large group was another important task. To accommodate different tastes and dietary preferences, I prepared four fillings: beef and cabbage, pork and radish, beef and radish, and cabbage with vermicelli and shiitake mushrooms. Offering different options helped make the activity more inclusive and gave participants a chance to experience different flavours of traditional Chinese dumplings.

During the event, I organizing and guiding the activities. Also, I assigned different tasks to each table to ensure that everyone had a chance to participate. I taught participants from different cultural backgrounds how to peel green onions, knead dough, chop vegetables, and wrap dumplings. Even those who had never made dumplings before could join in and learn new skills. I wanted to help participants feel comfortable, included, and proud of their contributions.

One of the most rewarding parts of the workshop was seeing people connect through teamwork. Many participants were meeting for the first time, but working together in the kitchen helped break the ice and encouraged natural conversations. Several people also brought homemade snacks and other food to share, adding to the warm, family-like atmosphere.

Together, participants made nearly 500 dumplings, and all of them were shared and enjoyed by the group. The atmosphere was so lively that some participants even volunteered to sing. Everyone contributed in their own way, making the gathering more than just a cooking activity.

Many participants expressed their hope that this event could become an annual tradition. Their enthusiasm showed us how important opportunities like this are for building friendships and strengthening community connections.

Through this project, I learned that food can be a powerful bridge between cultures. Careful planning, flexible teamwork, and giving everyone a meaningful role can turn a simple cooking activity into a memorable community experience. I am grateful to NSG for supporting this initiative and helping bring people together to celebrate culture, friendship, and belonging in Mission.
