Project Summary: “Roaming Zines: Stories of Migration and Identity”
Roaming Zines: Stories of Migration and Identity” was a deeply moving celebration of community, storytelling, and creative self-expression! Building on the success of last year’s pilot, this second edition expanded into two distinct workshops designed to honour our journeys and identities through the art of zines.
Over two inspiring days, around 45 participants in total gathered to fold paper, share memories, and create meaningful personal booklets in a welcoming, inclusive space:
- October 14th (Spanish): “Tell Your Own Migration Story Through a Zine” brought together Latin American migrants to navigate the emotional stages of migration, from the initial decision to future hopes.
- October 23rd (English): “Express Yourself Through a Zine” invited a diverse group to explore identity as fluid and multifaceted, answering the imaginative prompt: “What if I were…?”
Each nearly 2.5 hour session combined learning and hands on creation. Following a brief introduction to zine history and a thoughtful land acknowledgment, participants crafted their booklets page by page. To finish, everyone received a unique, hand coloured copy of my zine “Un mundo de posibilidades” for the Spanish session and “A World of Possibilities” for the English session, and gathered together to share stories over healthy snacks.
As a special closing exercise, participants contributed to a collective poem inspired by a reflective prompt. These poems will be compiled into a final community zine to be shared in the near future.
Roaming Zines proved to be so much more than a workshop; it was a safe haven for connection, healing, and celebrating who we are and who we can become.
