As a new mom in Whistler, I was feeling a lack of in person connection with other new moms in town and, after speaking with a few other new mom friends, I applied for a grant to host a “Mom and Baby Yoga” event outside and, most importantly, in person!
The intent of the event was to connect and welcome new moms who had babies during the pandemic.
To get word out about the event, I created an event on Eventbrite.ca (which is free for free events). I included all the “who/what/when/where” details for the event and then posted a link on local mom/parent Facebook pages encouraging new moms to sign up. I’m glad we made participants sign up as we had to postpone the date once because of the weather and this allowed me to email all participants directly to make them aware.
I emailed/called around to a few local businesses to ask if they wanted to sponsor the event with a prize and was pleasantly surprised by the positive response. We received generous donations from Nesters Market, Scandinave Spa, Mountain Kids Outfitters and Whistler Cooks.
The grant that we received from the from the Whistler Community Foundation was very much appreciated. We used the grant to purchase supplies to do a breakfast and coffee station, pay for the yoga instructor and equipment/supplies.
On the day of the event, we had a great turnout with approximately 30 local moms in attendance. The mom and baby yoga was a lot of fun and there was a such great sense of connection and community. It was very rewarding to see the event come together.
Thank you again to the Whistler Community Foundation and Neighbourhood Small Grants for making the event possible!
