As part of our commitment to reconciliation and to engage the local indigenous
community, the Wall St. Community Garden decided to commission an indigenous art
themed mural to be installed in the garden. Once the mural was complete the WSCG
held a community celebration and unveiling ceremony during Neighbourhood Food
Week. The celebration included a traditional opening by an indigenous Elder, hoop
dancing and drumming and singing. The artist who painted the mural was among the
speakers at the event.

The project exceeded our expectations. The mural is stunning and
has added beauty to the garden and is reflective of its location on traditional Tsleil
Waututh territory. The project ended with a joint community celebration at the
beginning of Neighbourhood Food Week in Oxford and Cambridge Parks. This
partnership with Vancouver Urban Food Forest Foundation allowed the project to be
completed within our budget. The community celebration and unveiling ceremony
was a wonderful neighbourhood event attended by many.
